Cleaning and beautifying where we live can be the call to action that sparks a disconnected and despairing community to build relationships and create a sense of belonging. In this session, weavers Asiaha Butler from Chicago, IL, and Jeudy Mom from Compton, CA, will share practical advice on how to start, sustain, and grow a community beautification project. Whether you were inspired by Weave’s newsletter to start a community beautification project in your neighborhood or are already leading one, this conversation will provide you with rich resources to help you in your weaving. Wednesday, November 29 at 8pm Eastern Time (7:00pm Central, 6:00pm Mountain, 5:00pm Pacific) About our conversation guides: Asiaha Butler was going to leave the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago where she and her husband grew up. She wanted a safer place to raise her family. One day, she was looking out her window and saw a small girl in a dress playing in the dirt of a vacant lot. She realized she couldn’t be just one more person who gave up on those kids and that place. She worked with neighbors and convinced the city to sell the vacant lots all over Englewood for a dollar. Over time, they turned the lots into gardens, gathering places, and sports fields, building pride and commitment as they build a prettier, more welcoming environment. She helped found and now leads RAGE, the Resident Association of Greater Englewood. After Jeudy Mom’s parents fled Cambodia as refugees in 1980, they landed in southern California. On Thanksgiving morning, he heard a knock at the door. He was eight and hoped Santa was delivering presents to good kids like him a month early. It was a present. Volunteers delivered a frozen turkey and boxed side dishes. That care and support when his family first arrived left a deep impression. Mom decided to pay it forward through a career mobilizing people to support their neighbors. For over a decade, he led the Compton Initiative, inspiring thousands of neighbors to come together across difference by cleaning up and beautifying their community.
